Best EV finance deals

We’ve been combing Free Trader UK for the best monthly finance deals on the hottest electric cars out there – here are the latest late summer picks

Little doubt that with changing commuting habits and all the rest that’s happened in recent times electric cars look even more attractive than ever, and many of us are considering making the switch. Good news? There are plenty of deals in the market and we’ve been crunching the numbers to bring you some of the most attractive over the summer period and into September.
List price remains a bottom line comparison but the reality is most people buy on finance. So we’ve been putting in the legwork to find out the best monthly PCP deals on a selection of our favourite electric cars. To help reduce the variables and offer a like-for-like comparison we asked manufacturers for a monthly cost based on a £4,000 initial deposit and 48-month term. Different brands may be offering different packages at any given time but this offers a level playing field so you can see how they compare like for like. Since the reduction in amount available via the Government Plug-In Car Grant (PICG) and stricter £35,000 threshold electric car pricing has changed in recent times, too. For those new to electric cars there is of course a lot of new jargon to understand. Fear not, we’ve got guides to all the questions you have, including how batteries work, how to charge and an idea of how those costs compare whether you’re doing it at home or hooking up at public points. Remember too that if you’re buying an EV as a company car you could save a packet on Benefit In Kind, while zero VED will help all drivers. See the shortlist below and click on a car to see the deal! Ford Mustang Mach-E BMW i3 Mini Electric Renault Zoe Hyundai Kona Electric Vauxhall Corsa-e Honda E

Ford Mustang Mach-E - £506.90/month

Any wobbles about Ford repurposing the classic Mustang name for an electric crossover are quickly forgotten when you check the stats and see what you get for the money. If not the cheapest monthly cost here it’s a reasonable figure when you consider it’s over 36 months, not the 48 of the other deals, the performance and 379-mile range of the rear-wheel drive Extended Range version in this deal. With that kind of distance between plug-ins you likely won’t have to worry about public charging and can instead reap the savings of doing it home on a cheap off-peak electricity tariff. Stylish, fast, practical and full of playful little flourishes this is an EV that ticks all the boxes.

BMW i3 - £361.36/month

The BMW i3 is a relatively old-player in the EV game but still looks fresh thanks to its funky styling while retaining the technical intrigue of its carbon fibre construction and quirky reverse-hinged rear doors. This deal is for the slightly less powerful standard version but the 170 horsepower, 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds and an official range of around 190 miles make it viable for EV owners who need a car capable of taking them beyond city limits.

Mini Electric - £284.55/month

The Mini Electric’s range may limit its use to short hops, though if your daily driving is less than a 100 miles, and you can charge at home overnight, that won’t be a problem. And you’ll have a blast at the wheel, the electrified version of the popular Hatch sharing all the nippiness and agility of the regular one but with the silence and instant torque of an EV. This deal is for the Level 1 trim.

Renault Zoe - £242/month

Like the Leaf, the Renault Zoe is a proven player in the EV world and excellent value for money, especially at this monthly price. This deal based on the less powerful R110 version, which loses a little in outright performance but has better range, the fact it’ll do 245 miles to a full charge making it even more appealing. An additional £1,000 on the already generous manufacturer deposit contribution makes the numbers even more attractive than they already were, too.

Hyundai Kona - £603.43/month

The new IONIQ 5 is exciting proof of how fast Hyundai is moving forwards with its electric line-up but the brand already has a foothold in the market and the Kona Electric makes a strong case for itself. The monthly cost isn’t the cheapest but you’re getting the more powerful of the two battery options with the best-case 300 miles of range on maximum charge. Like the Mach-E this should mean reduced dependence on expensive public charge points and the ability to save cash by plugging into cheap off-peak electricity tariffs at home.

Vauxhall Corsa-e - £195/month

As Rory Reid has been finding out, the Corsa-e might not be the sexiest EV out there but works brilliantly and makes the switch to battery power pretty much painless. And for less than £200 per month this deal is especially attractive, the Corsa-e perfect for people who just need a car, not a lifestyle statement on wheels. This deal is for the well-equipped SRi Nav Premium trim, with built-in navigation, rear parking sensors, a black roof and sporty looking 17-inch wheels.

Honda E - £449.82/month

The Honda E is one of the most fashionable and desirable electric cars around, as we found out living with one as a long-term test car. The of-the-moment electric propulsion is obviously a big draw, but the cute exterior styling, widescreen interior displays and cool cabin design all add up to a very appealing package, especially in this well-equipped Advance trim. A £50 saving on the previous monthly price makes this already attractive car look even better.
